How Can I Prevent Yeast Infections?

Yeast infections are relatively common. In fact, nearly 75% of women will have at least one in their lifetimes.

While yeast infections are most common among females, they can affect males, too. And, they don’t affect only the vagina, they can occur on the penis and other areas of the body, like in the mouth and throat. To learn more about this common type of infection from our AFC Urgent Care Gastonia team, read on!

What Is a Yeast Infection?

A vaginal yeast infection, which is also sometimes called vulvovaginal candidiasis, happens when the healthy yeast that normally lives in your vagina grows out of control.

Candida is a naturally occurring microorganism in the vaginal area. Lactobacillus bacteria keeps its growth in check. If there’s an imbalance in your system, however, these bacteria won’t work effectively. This, in turn, leads to an overgrowth of yeast, which causes the symptoms of vaginal yeast infections.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

  • Itching and irritation in the vagina and vulva
  • A burning sensation—especially during intercourse or while urinating
  • Redness and swelling of the vulva
  • Vaginal pain and soreness
  • Vaginal rash
  • Thick, white, odor-free vaginal discharge with a cottage cheese appearance
  • Watery vaginal discharge

What Can I Do Prevent a Yeast Infection?

While the below-mentioned prevention tactics are effective, it’s important to still keep in mind that you may simply be prone to frequent yeast infections or genetically predisposed to yeast infections.

Still, preventive measures may help a lot with preventing a yeast infection.

Ways to Prevent a Yeast Infection

  • Wear cotton underwear and change it regularly. Also wear loose, cotton clothing. Tight clothing might trap in moisture and cause friction on your skin, making areas more susceptible to yeast overgrowth.
  • Wipe front to back to help prevent additional microorganisms from being pushed up in the vagina or introduced into the urinary tract.
  • Avoid sexual activity while a partner has a yeast infection, even if they don’t have active symptoms. Yeast infections can be passed back and forth.
  • Take antifungal medications (fluconazole) whenever you’re prescribed an antibiotic, since antibiotics can sometimes cause a yeast imbalance. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you’re prone to yeast infections.
