Am I at Risk for Diabetes?

The honest truth is that we’re all at risk of diabetes. But some people are at a higher risk than others for Type 2 diabetes, which is largely related to lifestyle.

Want to learn more? Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care Gastonia offers some insight about diabetes and how to prevent it.

What Are the Types of Diabetes?

There are two main types of diabetes—Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed in childhood and occurs when the body doesn’t produce insulin, which is necessary to convert glucose into energy.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body either doesn’t make or doesn’t use insulin effectively. There’s also a condition known as prediabetes that means a person’s blood sugar level is too high, but not high enough to signal diabetes.

Type 2 Risk Factors

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Having a sedentary lifestyle
  • Having high blood pressure
  • Having a family history of diabetes
  • Being age 45 or older

How Can I Prevent Diabetes?

Well, it depends on what type of diabetes you’re talking about. Type 1 diabetes, as we mentioned earlier, is usually diagnosed in childhood. It is thought to have a genetic component and really isn’t preventable.

Type 2 diabetes, though, has risk factors that are related to lifestyle habits. Taking steps toward living a healthier lifestyle can help lower your risk.

How to Lower Your Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

  • Eat a balanced diet filled with fruits and veggies.
  • Choose lean proteins (such as chicken or fish) and whole grains.
  • Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes most days.
  • Prioritize getting between seven and nine hours of sleep each night.
  • Talk with your doctor about ways to lower your blood pressure.
