It can be hard to watch our little ones feel sick! Treating your child’s symptoms is usually in the forefront of your mind to help him or her feel better. When it comes to fevers, did you know that the majority of them are actually helping your child fight off illness?

Fevers can help speed up your child’s healing process and help him or her overcome illness. If your child has a fever, read to learn how to help with these tips from our AFC Urgent Care Gastonia team.

What Is Considered a Fever in a Child?

Many things can cause mild fevers, ranging from infection to the teething process! If your child runs a rectal or ear temperature that is 100.4 degrees or higher, it is considered a fever. A fever doesn’t necessarily mean you should panic, though. Most fevers indicate that your child’s body is healthy and fending off illness the way it should.

As your child’s body temperature rises, it creates a harder environment for the infection or illness to replicate and grow. The cool thing is that it also creates a more optimal environment for your child’s white blood cells to work and attack the infection! While fevers can be beneficial, they can also make your child feel pretty bad, so it is OK to treat the fever.

At-Home Fever Remedies

  • OTC medication
  • Rest and sleep
  • Plenty of fluids
  • Lukewarm baths

When Will My Child’s Fever Go Away?

With most fevers, they tend to go away on their own within a day or so as your child’s body overcomes the illness. When your child starts to feel better, chances are that his or her fever is gone, too!

If your child’s fever doesn’t respond to OTC medication or if your child has a fever that gets up to 104 degrees or higher, it is important to bring him or her in to be seen right away. If your child is 3 months old or younger and has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher, seek care promptly. If your child has an infection, it can be more dangerous in little bodies!
