Am I Dealing With Fall Allergies?

Fall has unofficially arrived already—and the official start is just days away. That brings hopes of cooler temperatures, sweater weather and fresh apple pies…but also the threat of fall allergies!

What can you do if seasonal allergies tend to plague you during the fall? Read on as our team at AFC Urgent Care Gastonia shares some insight.

What Are Fall Allergies?

Odds are, if you experience allergy symptoms in the spring, you will again in the fall. That’s because around 75% of people who are allergic to spring plants are also allergic to ragweed, which is what drives fall allergies.

Ragweed begins to release pollen in late August and will continue to do so through September and October, so if you’re having allergy symptoms, they’re likely to linger for a bit, even as the days get cooler.

Allergy Symptoms

  • Runny nose
  • Undereye circles
  • Itchy eyes or nose
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes

How Can I Find Relief From Fall Allergies?

Because allergy symptoms overlap some with other medical conditions, keep an eye on your symptoms and talk with your doctor if they’re occurring even when you aren’t exposed to pollen. This is especially important this fall, with the cold and flu season coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you know you’re dealing with allergies, there are some steps you can take to find relief at home. If they don’t help you, though, your doctor may be able to prescribe other therapies that can help.

Ways to Avoid or Treat Fall Allergies

  • Keep the windows and doors closed to keep ragweed pollen out.
  • Take off your shoes and throw your clothes in the laundry when coming inside.
  • Try taking an OTC antihistamine to prevent allergy symptoms.
  • If needed, try OTC allergy nasal sprays or decongestants to alleviate symptoms.
